(English below) Stel je voor. Je bent gevlucht uit Syrië, komt in Nederland en je verlangt ernaar eennieuw leven te beginnen. Hoe maak je dan contact met de mensen in je gastland? Veertien Syrische vluchtelingen besloten om die reden een koor te vormen met de naam: New Life. Muziek als sleutel voor verbinding tussen mensen.
New Life is ontstaan in oktober 2015 vanuit het verlangen van veertien Syrische vluchtelingen om een nieuw leven te beginnen. Van het eerste lied dat het koor instudeerde is nu een videoclip gemaakt in de binnenstad van Groningen. “Voordat de clip gemaakt werd, is het nummer eerst opgenomen in de studio”, vertelt Sophie Dinglinger, coördinator kunst en cultuur bij Groningen Verwelkomt. “Met die muziekopname zijn we naar de binnenstad gegaan, zodat ze mee konden zingen en beeld en geluid synchroon zouden lopen”.
“Het koor bestaat uit Syrische vluchtelingen die in hun eigen land nog niet eerder in een koor zaten”, vertelt Dinglinger. “De koorleden willen graag iets teruggeven aan de Groningers, omdat ze zich zo welkom voelen. Dat doen ze juist in de vorm van muziek en zang. Want wanneer je zingt maakt het niet uit of je christen of moslim bent: dan is iedereen gelijk. Samen muziek maken, dat is waar het hen om gaat. De groep is erg close met elkaar: het is hun familie op dit moment. Door het koor hebben ze iets wat nu belangrijk voor ze is, wat zin geeft aan het alledaagse leven.”

Imagine. You escaped from Syria, come in the Netherlands and you desire to begin a new life. How would you make contact with the people in your new home country? Fourteen Syrian refugees decided for this reason to form a choir with the name: New Life. Music as the key to connect people.
New Life is founded in October 2015 from the desire of fourteen Syrian refugees to begin a new life. From the first song that the choir rehearsed, there is a video clip made in the city center of Groningen. Sophie Dinglinger, coordinator of art and culture at Groningen Verwelkomt said, “The song was recorded in a studio before the clip was made. With the recorded music we went to the city center so that they can sing along and synchronise the sound and the movie.”
“The choir consists of Syrian refugees who, earlier, in their own land, have never been sitting in a choir” Dinglinger said. “The choir members would like to give something back to the Groningers, because they feel welcomed. They do it thus in the form of music and singing. Because when you sing, it doesn’t matter if you’re Christian or Muslim: then everybody is the same Making music together, that’s what it’s all about. The group is very close with each other: it is their family at the moment. Because of the choir, they have something important for them now, which gives courage for the daily life.”
