“Vluchtelingen en stadjers samen de schoonheid van de stad laten zien” / “Showing refugees and citizens the beauty of the city”

Groningen Verwelkomt organiseert regelmatig stadswandelingen voor vluchtelingen en stadjers. Ook begin februari maakten tien stadjers met tien vluchtelingen uit de noodopvang aan de Van Swietenlaan een wandeling door het centrum van Groningen. Het weer was die dag koud en guur, maar de gezelligheid en het samen zijn verwarmden de harten van deelnemers en voorbijgangers.
Initiatiefneemster Sophie Dinglinger is stadsgids bij de VVV en kwam zo op het idee om deze acitiviteit te organiseren bij Groningen Verwelkomt. Sophie: “Mijn eerste intentie was vooral dat ik me kon voorstellen dat het leuk zou zijn voor de mensen in de noodopvang om iets te kunnen ond
ernemen. Mensen zitten daar veel binnen en willen juist graag hun omgeving leren kennen en andere mensen ontmoeten. Zelf heb ik veel vrienden die de geschiedenis van de stad eigenlijk niet zo goed kennen, dus dat leek me leuk om te combineren tot een stadswandeling waarbij vluchtelingen en stadjers elkaar kunnen ontmoeten.”
De meeste vluchtelingen spreken nog weinig Engels of Nederlands, maar met een paar woorden, een glimlach en handen en voeten kun je toch veel aan elkaar duidelijk maken. Ook al begrepen de deelnemers niet alles wat er verteld werd, iedereen vond het duidelijk heel interessant. Sophie: “Er was een Afghaanse vader van een jonge tweeling die bijzonder geïnteresseerd was, hij maakte zelfs aantekeningen en stelde veel vragen. Heel leuk om te zien.” De deelnemers kregen na afloop alle informatie op papier mee, met foto’s van de gebouwen.
De wandelingen zijn een s
ucces en worden regelmatig georganiseerd. Sophie: “Er is heel veel belangstelling bij de vluchtelingen en ook vrijwilligers vinden het ontzettend leuk om te doen. Groningen Verwelkomt regularly organises citywalk for refugees and citizens. In the beginning of February, ten citizens and ten refugees from the emergency shelter at the Van Swietenlaan did a citywalk in the city center of Groningen. That day the weather was cold and stormy, but the fun and the togetherness warmed the hearts of the participants and the people crossing by.
The initiative taker, Sophie Dinglinger, is a city guide at the VVV (tourist center) and she came to the idea to organise this activity at Groningen Verwelkomt. Sophie: ””My first intention was especially that I can imagine that it will be nice for the people at the emergency shelter to be able to do something. The people there stay inside a lot while they’re actually willing to get to know their neighbourhood and meet other people. I myself have a lot of friends who don’t really know the history of the city, thus it seemed nice to combine this into a citywalk where the refugees and the citizens can meet each other.
Most of the refugees barely speak English or Dutch, but with some words, smiles, hands and feet you can actually make a lot of things clear to each other. Even though the participants don’t understand everything that is being told, clearly everybody found it interesting. Sophie: “There was an Afghan father of young twins that was very interested, he even made drawings and asked a lot of questions. It’s very nice to see that.” After the walk, the participants received all information on paper with pictures of the buildings.
The citywalk was a success and is organised regularly. Sophie: “There is a lot of interest from the refugees, and volunteers also found it really fun to do.
